about

For my fifth album I wanted to return to a more acoustic, intimate sound after the more studio-centric approach of "Trust Aqua". This one is basically all live in the studio with what was then the working version of House Of Illusion (Nate, Matt., Bill, and now Loren Stillman on saxophone) plus my long time friend and musical associate Guillermo Klein on the Wurlitzer. Also this is the only recording of mine where all the lyrics are in my native language. Japanese dictates a very different melodic shape and there is a directness for me as a composer and performer, of course, when I work in my native language. "Alfama" is a song written in Japanese by a Japanese woman who has lived over half her life in the United States, about one of my favorite places in the world, in Portugal, and it sets the tone for what follows very nicely. For what ever reason there is a melancholic feeling to this recording that I really dig. This is maybe the closest I've come to capturing the vibe of our live gigs at, say, Barbes in Brooklyn. Oh how I wish in these crazy times to be back there.
