This is where it all began. I moved to New York in 1995 and although I was doing some gigs around town as a sideman I quickly realized that for me to survive here I had to develop my own thing as an artist. First I needed a band. In that I was fortunate to already have personal and musical relationships with these amazing cats. Next I needed some music. My four tunes here are my first original compositions. Those plus one of Matt's and a few covers (including Pete's wonderful arrangement of "Goodbye Porkpie Hat") and we were off and running. After some gigs around town we were ready to go into the studio. Enter Kenji Shimoda and the now long-defunct Kampo studios. And thus "House Of Illusion" was born, for better or worse. It feels very odd to revisit myself as an artist from twenty-two years ago; my music now bears little resemblance to what's documented here. But that's a good thing, I think. I can tell you that this is an honest representation of where I was at then and I have to admit that I got a bit of a kick out of spending a little time with me and the boys from back then. I hope that you do as well.
